Demonstrative Pronouns


Sometimes, we use words like this or that to talk about abstract ideas or unknown objects. They don’t always refer to an object that we can assign gender to. In these cases, we just use the single or plural masculine form of the pronoun.

¿Qué es esto?           What’s this (unknown object)?
Esto es…                  This (situation) is…

¿Qué fue eso?           What was that?
Eso es…                   That’s…
**Eso, for example, is often used to talk about a situation.

¿Qué es aquello?     What is that?
Aquello es…            That is…
