Prepositions and Gerunds (-ing Verbs)

In English, we use the gerund (verbs that end with -ing) after a preposition. (“After cleaning up, we watched a movie.”) However, in Spanish, we don’t use gerunds after a preposition; we use the infinitive.

For example:

Before cooking                     Antes de cocinar
After eating                           Después de comer
Without drinking                 Sin beber
Instead of working              En vez de trabajar

Wash your hands before eating.              Lávate las manos antes de comer.
